The largest and best-known of Zimbabwe’s National Parks, Hwange is easily accessed from Victoria Falls with road transfers, light aircraft and now even trains, including an overnight option, all available to get visitors there in good time. Occupying approximately 14,650 square km of North-Western Zimbabwe, Hwange is a mixture of open grasslands and mopane woodlands, although curiously there is no ‘natural’ surface water in the park, meaning all waterholes are filled with pumped ground water which makes it a wonderful spot for year-round game viewing.
Elephant are the main attraction of a tailor-made Hwange safari, with some estimates stating up to 30,000 individuals within the park so sightings are virtually guaranteed. Lion, leopard and wild dog are found in strong numbers whilst the large open plains are ideal hunting territory for cheetah which are also present in the park. Roan and sable both occur in good numbers, a rarity anywhere in Africa so a big drawcard for safari enthusiasts keen to see something a little ‘different’.
There are a huge number of Hwange lodges and camps both in the national park and the neighbouring private concessions, with the majority of these located on the northern and eastern boundaries of the park. In recent years, a small handful of properties have started to open in the more remote eastern and central parts of the park, offering visitors a unique experience and feeling of isolation, as well as providing a significant deterrent to poaching activities.
