Borana Lodge

The grandfather of the present owners of Borana fell in love with the wildness and soul-enriching isolation of this landcape. Just 17 miles north of the equator and 6,000 feet above sea level, Borana Lodge and conservancy is a glorious combination of climate, wildlife, landscape & wonderful hospitality. Panoramic views abound in every direction… towards the Lewa Plains and the Ngare Ndare Forest on the one side and with majestic Mount Kenya looming high on the other.

There are eight cottages at Borana, four with large double beds and four with twin beds. Four of the cottages have their own veranda and four share two verandas – all with stunning views over wild African landscapes. From the infinity pool guests can watch the elephants wandering at the watering hole or simply relax, read and soak up the sun. The pool veranda is a favourite place for a long, leisurely lunch watching the natural world unfold before you. Sound dreamy? That’s because it really is!

Borana’s experienced guides know the ranch intimately and can usually find the animals that guests most want to see and as this is a private property, there are no game park rules and no one else will ever obscure your view of the big game that lives here. Albert, my guide on my last two visits, sought out extraordinary sightings of wildlife both large and small… a pride of lions hunting, rhino, enormous herds of buffalo, giraffe and plains game galore.

But there’s more to Borana than just game drives, there is an first class horseback safari operation, guests can step behind the scenes of the ranching operation (more interesting that you might think) and should you need an adrenaline hit, they offer rock climbing, biking and even paragliding.
