The exact timings of the migration can vary year on year

The Great Wildebeest Migration which traverses through Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara is on of the most famous wildlife spectacles of the natural world. No doubt it’s on every wildlife photographer an enthusiast’s bucket list of experiences but knowing where to go and when can be tricky to decide.

There are many highlights within the Great Migration’s continuous circular calendar as the wildebeest and other migratory species follow behind the rains which promote the growth of fresh pastures which provide sustenance for the millions of animals.

The beginning of the calendar year sees the calving season in the southern regions of the Serengeti’s Ndutu region sees thousands upon thousands of wildebeest, zebra and antelope being born every singe day with countless predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena lurking to take full advantage.

The most famous part of the migration are the famed river crossings in the Grumeti and Mara river regions, where the mega-herds cross the river systems. These rivers are filled with the threat of monstrously big crocodiles who have waited patiently for the herds to arrive and brave a crossing. But don’t forget, once the herds have thwarted the crocodiles’ jaws, there are still plenty of predators waiting to take those who have exhausted themselves with a treacherous swim.

With plenty more highlights and phenomenal wildlife encounters to experience it can be tricky to decide where to go… which is why we’ve created some great information for you below and suggestions where to stay.

But if you’d rather speak with an experienced Africa travel expert; we’re always on hand to give you the best information possible and create the perfect tailor-made Great Migration safari for you.
