Trailblazing wildlife conservancies on the Laikipia Plateau
Go camel trekking and horse riding, explore the largest rhino sanctuary in Kenya, and experience life on a cattle ranch on a tailor made Lewa safari
The Conservancies of Lewa and Borana are Northern Kenya’s trailblazers when it comes to wildlife conservation, and thanks to unwavering anti-poaching efforts, together they form the largest rhino sanctuary in the country. You’ll also find the big five here, as well as healthy populations of leopard, waterbuck, giraffe and even wild dog. Dramatic scenery and high concentrations of game make this often-overlooked area on the Laikipia Plateau one of the best places for safaris in Kenya. It’s great for birding too, with over 350 species from flamingos and raptors to bustards and spoonbills, so don’t forget to pack your binoculars.
Dominated by the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya, the plains, woodlands and wetlands offer some truly unique wildlife viewing experiences. As well as traditional game drives and bush walks, you can go camel trekking or horse riding across the plateau or take a scenic flight over the endless savannah, whilst those with energy to burn can even run a marathon over the plains. Alternatively you might like to get involved in life on a cattle ranch on a luxury Borana safari, sip sundowners on Pride Rock (you’ll recognise this from Disney’s Lion King!), or take part in conservation work and visit villages to learn about the local culture.
