The perfect safari holiday in Laikipia
A beautiful and remote region between Mount Kenya and Samburu, with a great range of landscapes and a great wildlife population
Laikipia County is a beautiful and remote region located north of Nairobi and between Mount Kenya, Samburu Game Reserve and Aberdare National Park. A lesser-travelled region of diverse topography, its high-altitude plateaus, low-forested valleys and deep rocky river gorges have become a sanctuary for elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and a wealth of plains game. The safari lodges in Laikipia are among the most luxurious in Kenya and the involvement of local Samburu and Masai communities in tourism allows visitors genuine engagement with local people.
The Laikipia Plateau is an area of sweeping plains and rugged gorges, beautiful country where thorny acacias and wild palms mingle with candelabra trees and gigantic rocky kopjes. Privately owned, this former ranch land is now devoted to wildlife conservation. Visitors have individually prepared schedules of walks, drives, picnics and (depending on the lodge) fishing, camel treks and horse-riding safaris. Laikipia has one of the most agreeable climates in the world – warm during the day, cool at night with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. Lying on the Equator, temperatures vary little year-round.
South of Laikipia, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has become a model for wildlife conservation on private land. The conservancy comprises of open savannah, acacia forest, rocky gorges and ravines, mountain forest and swamplands and is home to an equally rich diversity of wildlife and over 450 bird species. It is one of the last remaining habitats of the Aquatic Sitatunga and home to one-fifth of the remaining Grévy’s zebra and growing populations of reticulated giraffe and both White and Black rhino.
Together with its neighbouring property Borana Wildlife Conservancy the two offer no less than 92,000 acres of uninterrupted natural habitat for free roaming wildlife. Linking Lewa and Mount Kenya National Park is the Ngare Ndare Forst – one of the only forests in the world that is growing in size! This lush green forest boasts a thick canopy, home to a variety of bird and wildlife. There are also beautiful waterfalls cascading into azure blue pools below. The forest has been used as a corridor by elephants for centuries.
Laikipia is perfect for those looking for a safari with a twist. If you are eager to see all the most popular species of wildlife but with the opportunity to take part in activities such as horse riding, canopy walks, rock-climbing and canyoning – Laikipia is for you!
