Pioneering the Northern Frontier
An exclusive experience riding across the Laikipia Plateau in Northern Kenya, truly experiencing the wild on horseback
Kenya is the birthplace of horseback safaris, offering some of Africa’s most outstanding riding. Sosian is no exception to this, and over the last 20 years has become one of Kenya’s top lodge based riding destinations.
Sosian offers luxury in the wild; ideal for those looking for a unique and genuine safari experience. The 24,000-acre private wildlife conservancy sits on the Laikipia plateau, 80km west of Mt Kenya, offering pure wilderness. Guests are accommodated in the original farmhouse, which sleeps up to 16 people and has a swimming pool, tennis court, organic vegetable garden, and a stable yard of 30 horses.
The Ride
Starting and finishing at Sosian, head out on the horses staying in fly camp as well as 2 other permanent camps in our area, with a night at each. Ride a full morning (with bush breakfasts along the way), arriving into each new camp in time for lunch. The riding is varied and at times fast paced, but tailored to the clients. The scenery is stunning and wildlife is plentiful.
Laikipia is stunningly unique in that you can ride across the entire plateau on private land. This means that you are unlikely to encounter any other tourists and you get an extremely exclusive experience. Throw in excellent wildlife and dramatic landscapes and this makes for an unforgettable riding safari.
The Horses
With a beautifully built stable yard for 30 horses, Sosian has always ensured a varied string of well-schooled and well-mannered horses to suit all abilities, and rides are tailored to ability. To ride out in the bush guests must be experienced and confident at all paces. Riders should be able to control their horse when cantering in open country and stay seated in case their horse spooks. At times the terrain is rough and riders must look out for holes in the ground. For beginners and young children we can offer shorter rides close to the lodge. We also offer lessons in the fenced sand arena.
The horses are generally thoroughbred or thoroughbred cross, with the tough native ponies originating from Ethiopia. Besides being stabled at night to protect them from lions, the Sosian horses otherwise live a very natural existence running as a herd during the day which we firmly believe gives us such easy horses to work with, as they are genuinely happy & relaxed animals.

The itinerary…
Day 1: Travel to Laikipia
Fly or drive up to Laikipia from Nairobi and on arrival at Sosian you will be met and shown around the lodge before lunch by the swimming pool.
After lunch by the pool and some time to relax and refresh yourselves, you will head to the stable yard to meet your horses and have an evening ride with your guide. 6pm return to the lodge, in time for a drink and dinner.
Day 2: Explore Sosian
Your days are tailored to you, but an early morning ride to a bush brunch will not disappoint.
Whilst the horses cool off under an Acacia tree you can enjoy delicious home cooked food to fuel you until your next meal! In the evening after a siesta, explore the ranch by car in order to get a different experience of the wildlife and property.
Day 3: Begin the adventure
After a morning of any activities that you choose, from the lodge, we will head off on the horses, whom you have now become familiar with, heading north towards our basic fly camp for the night. You will traverse a varied cross-section of landscapes and habitats of Sosian, ending up on the vast open plains so characteristic of East Africa.
Your camp will be ready for you with cold drinks and hot bush showers, and a 3-course dinner under the stars, whilst the horses are secured for the night on the picket line close to camp. This will be your most basic accommodation over the week and a truly magical experience of simple comforts under canvas, reminiscent of a bygone era.
Day 4: Head for Suyian
Waking up with the sun and a hot cup of tea or coffee, you will get ready to ride off in an easterly direction, stopping for breakfast under a shady tree.
As you continue to ride down into the valley, you will meet the Ewaso Narok River and follow its winding path until, we reach Suyian Soul, Laikipia’s ultimate ‘eco camp.’ After lunch head out on foot , learning about the medicinal qualities of many plants and how they are used by the local tribes-people. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the best!
Day 5: Across to Laikipia Wilderness
Leaving after breakfast, we will spend a full morning exploring Suyian by horseback, with good opportunity for long canters across the plains and jumping any obstacles along the way this is a super morning of riding. As we head back towards the Ewaso Nyiro River we cross onto Ol Donyo Lemboro Ranch.
We arrive at Laikipia Wilderness Camp in time for lunch. Later that afternoon we can head out into the bush for a game drive and / or a walk. This area is good for tracking wild dog and such encounters on foot, are an exhilarating and thrilling experience not to be missed. Additionally this area has become famous for its rare melanistic (black) leopard which is also a must-see.
Day 6: Return to Sosian
This morning we head off early again, into the beautiful and unexplored Mutara Valley. Winding our way through this ‘Garden of Eden’, following the seasonal river bed we’re likely to come across giraffe, elephant, eland and buffalo amongst others. Under the shade of a large Acacia tree, with plenty of fresh water for the horses, we’ll stop for a bush breakfast.
After breakfast, this is our last leg of the journey riding past seasonal marshlands and back to Sosian in time for a well-deserved lunch by the pool and an afternoon to relax and refresh! This evening you can head out for an evening game drive or camel ride to sundowners and a bush dinner around the campfire. You may even be lucky enough to spot the ‘not-so-elusive’ leopard on the way back to the lodge for the night!
Day 7: Enjoy Sosian
Today is entirely flexible to do as you wish. For those who wish to ride again, a morning out riding around the cross-country course is a lot of fun or if the dams are full enough, swimming with the horses is also a great experience. Jumping off waterfalls, kayaking, mountain biking, cattle ranching, or simply taking it all in and relaxing by the pool, you can fill your day as much or as little as you want!
