Unspoilt tropical beaches

White powder-soft sands fringed with palm-trees, warm turquoise seas teeming with fish and at the right time of year even whale sharks.

Kenya has over 500Km of tropical coasts and beaches which can rival the Caribbean (and without the jet lag), making it an ideal beach holiday destination in its own right, or easily combined with a safari. Sit and do nothing on the dazzling white sand as you watch dhows sail slowly by or for the more active, discover a plethora of activities available.

There are ancient Swahili towns where life goes a little slower just waiting to be explored, mangroves to sail down spotting birds and fish, camel rides down the beach, waves to fly off kitesurfing and plenty of big fish from marlin to swordfish to catch.

The Kenyan coast has some fantastic reefs making this a wonderful spot for snorkelling and diving, particularly between October and February when the warm waters are at their clearest. It is also when whale sharks head towards the coast swimming up from Diani beach - a true once-in-a-lifetime experience to swim alongside the giants. Watamu Marine National Park is brilliant for beginners with colourful parrot fish and sturgeon, or more advanced divers can take a dhow from Diani beach to Kisite National Park where you can see barracuda, rare zebra sharks and some of the largest manta rays on the east coast of Africa.

Kenya's south coast is home to the uncrowded Diani beach with miles of pristine beaches and plenty of watersports to entertain everyone, in the middle is Watamu is known for its pristine marine park and the longstanding and ever-popular Hemmingways hotel, or head north to Lamu island where you go back in time with no cars and donkeys pulling carts just outside of Kenya's oldest settlements - Peponi is always a social and popular option here, or Manda Bay is brilliantly private and romantic. The range of accommodation is vast from family-sized private villas, private family-run hotels and luxury boutique b&bs, there is something for everyone.
