The only lodge in Uganda offering overnight horseback safaris with fly-camping
Location
Mihingo Lodge is perched on a rocky kopje overlooking Lake Mburo National Park, set on a private 200‑acre reserve adjacent to the park in western Uganda. Its elevated location offers sweeping savannah and lake views and provides effortless access to the park’s wildlife habitats, making it a dramatic and immersive base for exploring this scenic protected area.
Rooms
The lodge offers 12 luxury tented rooms thoughtfully designed to harmonise with the natural environment. Elevated on wooden platforms and thatched roofs, each canvas tent features en‑suite bathrooms with hot and cold water, private verandas with panoramic views, and interiors that blend local materials with safari‑style comfort.
Facilities
Facilities at Mihingo Lodge include an infinity swimming pool with breathtaking views across the plains and waterhole, a central dining and bar area where guests can enjoy fresh, locally sourced cuisine, and communal lounges perfect for sundowners. Outdoor fire pits and shaded deck spaces allow for relaxation between excursions, complemented by massage services and orientation talks.
Activities
The range of experiences here is exceptional for a small safari property. Horseback safaris are a highlight, offering silent wildlife encounters on well‑trained horses. Guests can also enjoy day and night game drives, guided walking safaris, forest walks with giraffes, boat trips on Lake Mburo, and mountain biking. Cultural visits to nearby Bahima cattle‑herding communities and nature walks around the reserve provide rich local context.
Sustainability
Mihingo Lodge combines eco‑friendly design with active conservation and community support. The entire property is powered by solar energy, including lighting, water heating and pumping systems, and it uses rainwater harvesting to minimise resource use. The lodge established the Mihingo Conservation and Community Development Foundation, which runs the Leopard and Hyena Conservation Project to compensate farmers for livestock losses from predators, reducing retaliatory killings and supporting wildlife coexistence. Approximately 70–80% of staff are locally employed, and the foundation also supports nearby primary schools and a local health centre, with guest stays contributing directly to these initiatives.
