The only lodge in Uganda offering overnight horseback safaris with fly-camping
One of our favourite properties in Uganda, this family-run lodge sits atop a rocky hill from where there are panoramic views over the savannah below. Just one of the highlights for guests is watching wildlife aggregating at a waterhole while relaxing in the infinity pool. Another is the chance to view thick-tailed Galagos (Bushbabies) near the bar at night. Mihingo Lodge is the only property in Uganda to offer overnight horseback safaris, combined with fly-camping.
The accommodation consists of twelve luxury en-suite, tented rooms which are either in the bush, overlooking the lake or nearer to the waterhole and salt lick. All the surroundings are wonderfully secluded and tranquil. The buildings have been thoughtfully designed to incorporate the impressive granite boulders. Solar power is used for lighting and heating, and an organic garden supplies the lodge’s vegetables and herbs.
There is plenty to do during your stay at Mahingo as they offer horse safaris, mountain bike safaris, walking safaris, night and day game drives and boat trips. While enjoying a night-time swim here, note that the candles around the property are bought from the Candle Light Foundation, an initiative that helps young girls to earn an income. While enjoying a couple of relaxing massages you will be helping a local Bahima farmer to pay for a goat taken by a leopard, as the proceeds go to the Mihingo Conservation & Community Development Foundation (MCCDF), founded by the lodge to protect Leopards and Hyenas. Guests can also visit the exemplary St Steven’s School nearby.
