One of only two lodges within the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Location
Buhoma Lodge is perched on a hillside within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, overlooking the forest canopy near the Buhoma sector park headquarters. Its position offers immediate access to the starting point for gorilla trekking, making it one of the closest lodges to the trailheads. Surrounded by dense rainforest, the lodge enjoys sweeping views across the treetops and valleys of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Rooms
The lodge features 10 comfortable wooden chalets, each built on raised platforms and designed to blend with the surrounding forest. Rooms include large beds with mosquito nets, en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot showers, and private verandas with panoramic views across the rainforest. Interiors combine local materials with warm wooden furnishings, creating a cosy retreat after a day in the forest.
Facilities
The main lodge area is constructed from timber and stone with a central lounge, bar and dining area set beneath a thatched roof. Large windows and an open deck provide uninterrupted views over the forest canopy. Guests can relax by the fireplace in cooler evenings, enjoy complimentary tea and coffee, and dine on freshly prepared meals featuring locally sourced ingredients. Massage services are also available.
Activities
The highlight of a stay here is mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Guided forest walks, birdwatching excursions and community visits to nearby Batwa and local villages can also be arranged. Cultural experiences, including traditional dance performances and craft demonstrations, provide insight into life around the forest.
Sustainability
The lodge works closely with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and local conservation partners to promote responsible tourism that directly supports gorilla habitat protection in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots. A significant portion of the team, from guides to hospitality staff, is drawn from surrounding villages, with ongoing training in wildlife interpretation, hospitality excellence and cultural stewardship ensuring tourism revenue benefits local families and builds skills that extend beyond the lodge.
