The perfect safari holiday in Swakopmund

Backed by the Namib and fronted by the Atlantic Ocean, this is an enjoyable place at which to relax for a day or two.

With its eclectic architecture incorporating noticeable colonial German elements, Swakopmund is a well-developed holiday town, certainly worth a day or two during an active Namibia itinerary. Along with many accommodation options come charming cafes (great for a coffee and cake break) and good quality restaurants where fresh seafood is a speciality. Restaurants do get incredibly busy, especially between April and November, so we can always help to make reservations, particularly for larger parties.

Spending a few days on a tailor made Swakopmund holiday is a natural break point for those travelling between Damaraland and Sossusvlei, and it’s always nice to have a few days back in civilisation after spending time out in the desolate deserts. Swakopmund is also easily accessed from Windhoek, with a tarred road linking the two, so can be used as a starting point for trips as well.

In recent times Swakopmund has become a centre for high adrenaline adventure activities and luxury Swakopmund tours. It’s a great area in which to go quad biking, sand boarding and horse riding. For visitors looking to get more of an insight into the extraordinary desert environments that surround the town, we highly recommend taking a Living Desert Tour, which is highly informative and a great way to spend a day. There is also the chance to take a boat cruise past Walvis Bay and down to Sandwich Harbour, a beautiful part of the coast and a popular trip from Swakopmund. Those after something more sedate could go on a marvellous morning kayaking excursion with Eco Marine Kayak Tours, around nearby Walvis Bay (a harbour town about 30km from Swakopmund). Guided by the (highly praised) owner Jeanne Meintjes, you can see huge numbers of seals up close, as well as a myriad of seabirds and if you’re lucky, cetaceans such as dolphins and even whales. Guests can also enjoy the 40km drive to Pelican Point, along which highlights include pelicans (of course!), flamingos and other aquatic birds.
