A true adventure in the Namibia wilderness

See desert-adapted elephant, rhino and giraffe amongst the endless plains and towering kopjes, and meet the Ovahimba people on a tailor made Kaokoveld safari

Stretching north from the tip of Damaraland towards the Kunene River and the border with Angola, the Kaokoveld covers 45,700 square kilometres and is regarded as one of the most inaccessible and inhospitable parts of Namibia. Road access is very limited, as are airstrips and few visitors venture up here, although those who do are amply rewarded by some of the most breathtaking scenery that this extraordinary part of the country has to offer.

Desert-adapted elephant, rhino and giraffe are often spotted here and are a big draw, although for us the solitude, endless plains and towering kopjes are an equally captivating reason to visit. There is also the chance to visit the local Ovahimba people who live in the region – a rare chance to get a genuine cultural experience in Namibia where usually such visits have become very contrived over recent years.

Permanent accommodation in this area is virtually non-existent so we offer guided camping safaris, starting from the tiny outpost of Sesfontein and moving north towards the Kunene River, through the Hartmann valley and Purros before visiting the Hoanib River. A Kaokoveld camping tour is an ideal add-on for visitors looking to spend a few days exploring a truly wild part of Namibia and are easy to access, starting and ending in the northern part of Damaraland. This unique area isn’t for everyone, as travelling can be hard going and there are few of the luxuries that are now associated with visiting Namibia, but it is a breathtaking area and well worth the visit. This is especially true for repeat visitors to Namibia who are drawn back to the endless desert landscapes but are looking to get a little off the beaten track and away from other visitors.
