The Western part of Etosha is the least visited part of the park, thanks to a lack of infrastructure, with both the road network and number of places to stay far less developed than in the Southern and Eastern sections.
That said, it is a beautiful area with some amazing landscapes and excellent game viewing, both of which are augmented by the relatively low visitor numbers, certainly compared to the other sections of Etosha. Indeed the absence of tourists is a boon to the biodiversity in the area and visitors will be able to see a much greater array of plantlife than elsewhere in the park. It is an especially good area for spotting rhino, both black and white, who are attracted by the abundant water found here – no fewer than 15 can be found dotted around the area. With just one lodge found inside the park, this is an area that is worth booking into as early as possible as it does get very full. There’s also the chance to stay in the private Hobatare Concession on a luxury Western Etosha holiday, just outside the park. It’s a beautiful area of open grasslands and rocky mountainsides, making it a particularly good area for spotting elephant. Unlike inside the park, night drives are allowed here, meaning rarer nocturnal creatures such as genets and bat-eared foxes are often seen.
