Western Etosha Safari Holidays

The western section of Etosha National Park is by far the least visited - not due to lack of wildlife, but because of limited infrastructure. Fewer roads and far fewer accommodation options make it a quieter, more off-the-beaten-track experience compared to the better-known southern and eastern areas.

What it lacks in development, it more than makes up for in atmosphere. The landscapes are striking, the game viewing excellent, and the low visitor numbers make sightings feel more exclusive. The absence of crowds has also benefited the local ecology; this part of the park supports an impressive variety of plant life and is especially rewarding for those with an interest in botany.

Western Etosha is known for its strong populations of both black and white rhino, drawn to the area's natural springs and permanent waterholes - more than 15 are scattered throughout the region. With just one lodge located inside the park here, early booking is essential.

For added flexibility and comfort, consider staying just outside the park in the private Hobatere Concession. This is prime elephant country, with sweeping grasslands and rugged mountains. Night drives are permitted here too, offering the rare opportunity to see nocturnal species such as bat-eared foxes and genets.
