Namibia Safaris

Namibia offers visitors a truly unique wildlife experience, with an astonishing array of mammals found throughout the vast desert that covers much of the country.

Almost all visitors will gravitate towards spending a few days in the iconic Etosha National Park in the north of the country where rhino, elephant, lion and leopard are the headline species. As well as traditional guide safaris, guests visiting the park are able to self-drive through the park, which really adds to the sense of adventure that safaris bring.

Further west, the deserts of Damaraland are home to desert-adapted rhino and elephant, with some amazing experiences to be had approaching these fascinating creatures on foot in the company of expert local guides.

Seemingly everywhere one travels through the country sightings of smaller desert wildlife, notably springbok, oryx and ostrich, are commonplace and a delightful way to break up long journeys.

Visitors to the fabled Skeleton Coast are treated to some incredible elephant and giraffe sightings, as well as having the opportunity to spend time with desert wildlife researchers which is a rare experience. Very fortunate visitors to the area may even see animals such as lion and brown hyena on the beach, as well as elephant frolicking in the surf – a once-in-a-lifetime sighting if you are lucky enough to come across it. Swakopmund and the nearby town of Walvis Bay are outstanding areas for birding and there is also the chance to learn about smaller desert wildlife on the unique “living desert” tours that are operated from the town.

For visitors looking to enjoy a more “traditional” southern African safari experience the beautiful Caprivi Strip offers riverine terrain, more large animals such as buffalo as well as wild dog – more akin to neighbouring Botswana than the rest of Namibia but a wonderful experience nonetheless.
