Shipwreck Lodge

Situated in the Namib desert’s Skeleton Coast concession, Shipwreck lodge is set in both a harsh and a beautiful location. While the desert vistas and ocean views are stunning, this stretch of coast is believed to have led to the sinking of thousands of ships, which is of course where the inspiration for the lodge design came from! The area is teeming with wildlife which has adapted to the unforgiving environment. The lodge can be accessed by aircraft or road transfer. Guests on self-drive holidays are required to leave their vehicles at the National Park’s entrance where they will be picked up by lodge staff.

Accommodation consists of ten luxury cabins, built in the style of shipwrecks. Eight of the cabins can either be twin or double while the other two are for families. The lodge welcomes children of all ages. All of the bedrooms contain en-suite bathroom facilities, a writing desk, safe and wood burning stove as well as their own viewing deck. Main areas include a restaurant and seating area with a viewing deck and amazing panoramas. The lodge is eco-friendly, with electricity being generated by solar power.

Activities include visiting Mowe Bay’s Cape Fur Seal colony which is actually one of the first places that sightings of these creatures were recorded. There is also the opportunity to explore a couple of the shipwrecks, as well as taking a trip to see the Clay Castles, with a good chance of seeing some of the area’s native wildlife, such as hyenas, lions and elephants. Alternatively, you can go fishing, as long as the weather permits, and the lodge’s chefs can cook any fish that you catch for your dinner.
