Swakopmund, with its striking blend of colonial German architecture and relaxed seaside charm, is a lively coastal town that adds variety and comfort to any Namibia itinerary. It’s particularly welcome after time in the desert, offering an easy pause between Damaraland and Sossusvlei or as a starting point thanks to the tarred road from Windhoek. The town boasts a good selection of accommodation, plus excellent cafés and restaurants, especially for seafood. Places do get booked up quickly, especially between April and November, so we’re happy to arrange reservations in advance, particularly for larger groups.

Tailor-made Swakopmund holidays have recently gained a reputation for high-energy adventure. Adrenaline-seekers can enjoy quad biking, sandboarding, or horse riding through the nearby dunes, while those keen to learn more about the desert can join the excellent Living Desert Tour - a favourite for its engaging insight into the region’s unique ecosystems. For time on the water, a boat cruise or kayak excursion around nearby Walvis Bay is a real highlight. Eco Marine Kayak Tours, led by the widely praised Jeanne Meintjes, offers close encounters with Cape fur seals, flamingos, pelicans, and, if you’re lucky, dolphins or even whales. The scenic drive to Pelican Point is also well worth it, especially for bird enthusiasts.
