Best time to visit Nicaragua
A month by month guide of when to visit Nicaragua
Nicaragua’s tropical climate is remarkably stable, staying hot all year round however is defined by two distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season, from November to April, is the best time to visit, offering predominantly dry days with temperatures ranging from 25-28°C and lower humidity. While occasional tropical showers may occur, they are usually confined to the Caribbean Coast. This pleasant weather makes it the busiest travel period in Nicaragua.
The rainy season begins in May and lasts until October, with humidity building steadily. During this time, the Caribbean coast experiences more rainfall than the Pacific, with showers typically lasting a few hours. Travel remains enjoyable until late August when heavier rains set in. September and October are the peak months for rainfall, which can sometimes cause travel disruptions. Despite the rain, Nicaragua's natural beauty can still be appreciated during these months.

January – April
Nicaragua’s dry season brings warm temperatures, clear blue skies, and abundant sunshine, making it an ideal time to visit. Higher altitudes can be cooler, especially at night, and the Caribbean coast may experience brief tropical showers. This period is perfect for exploring the country, but it's important to plan for popular holidays like New Year, and Easter, as these attract both local and foreign tourists. During these times, many Nicaraguans flock to the coast and lakes, and accommodations fill up quickly.
May – August
May marks the start of Nicaragua's rainy season, and it typically brings higher temperatures. Showers are usually brief, occurring in the afternoon or overnight, and rarely last more than a few hours. This season offers lower prices and fewer tourists, making it an excellent time to explore key attractions. It's also ideal for snorkelling and birdwatching, as the lush countryside is at its most vibrant.
However, from July onwards, the weather becomes increasingly wet and humid, with a higher risk of tropical storms.
September - October
September and October are the wettest months in Nicaragua, with heavy rains that can disrupt travel, especially in rural areas. While the weather isn’t as extreme as in Caribbean islands, it’s best to avoid visiting during these months as travel around the country can be unpleasant.
November – December
In late November, Nicaragua’s beaches come alive, especially around San Juan del Sur, with a week-long surfing competition. This event showcases the country’s top surfing spots and draws both competitors and spectators.
Early December marks the start of the festive Purisima celebrations, which honour the Immaculate Conception. Across various towns, you’ll find lively street processions, traditional songs, and spectacular fireworks displays.
As Christmas and New Year approach, Nicaragua bursts into a festive atmosphere. Towns and cities are filled with colourful decorations, and celebrations are vibrant and joyous, often featuring fireworks. This is a popular time for both locals and tourists, so it’s important to book accommodations well in advance, as they fill up quickly.
