A city of history, nature, and… cats!

Whether you're relaxing in the rainforests or exploring the city streets, Kuching has something for everyone.

Kuching, known as the "Cat City" in Malay, is a place where modernity meets tradition. One of its major draws is the Bako National Park, which boasts diverse ecosystems, including mangrove forests, jungles, and unique wildlife. Trekking through its well-maintained trails will bring you face-to-face with proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and a rich variety of flora. It's a nature lover's paradise.

There are a few theories as to why Kuching is called "Cat City." One popular explanation is that the name "Kuching" itself sounds similar to the Malay word for cat, "kucing." This linguistic coincidence has led to the city's association with cats.

Another theory is based on the legend that a Brunei princess, named Puteri Bujang Serina, arrived in Kuching and saw a wild cat. She believed that the cat's behaviour resembled the auspicious signs she had been searching for, which led her to establish a settlement in the area. As a result, the cat became a symbol of good fortune, and over time, this led to the city adopting the cat as a symbol.

In Kuching, you'll find numerous cat-related elements throughout the city, including cat statues, murals, and even a cat museum. The city's affection for cats has become a charming and iconic feature of its identity, making it a memorable and unique destination for tourists.

So, while Kuching is not overrun by actual cats, it has embraced its feline association with a sense of whimsy and pride, making it an interesting and cat-friendly destination for visitors.

For history buffs, Kuching's historic waterfront is a must-visit. The beautiful Sarawak River, flanked by colonial-era buildings and bustling markets, sets the stage for a cultural journey. The Sarawak Museum and the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre are great places to learn about the indigenous cultures and endangered orangutans, which are being rehabilitated for release into the wild.

Food in Kuching is an adventure of its own. Sample Sarawak laksa, a local noodle dish packed with flavors, or try the unique "layer cake" desserts. The street food scene is vibrant, with stalls offering an array of tantalizing dishes like satay, rojak, and kolo mee.

The vibrant night markets, especially the Pasar Satok, are a treat for shoppers, offering traditional handicrafts, textiles, and exotic spices. You can't leave without picking up some souvenirs that showcase the local craftsmanship.
