São Tomé and Príncipe Trekking

Step into a Jurassic Landscape with a guide during your stay on both Sao Tome island and Principe island. It’s incredibly hot and humid on both islands – particularly during the rainy seasons of May-Mar and Oct-Dec. Being on the equator, temperatures range from 25 to 27 degrees Celsius year-round. Lace your hiking boots and don a rain jacket if necessary, but don’t hold back from exploring.

Whilst Sao Tome typically has more cultural and literary importance, Principe comes out on top in terms of geology and ecological interest. Principe is the older of the two islands, but far smaller, at nearly a 10th of the size!! Principe is 31 million years old – 3 and 6 times respectively older than the oldest Hawaiian or Galapagos islands.

Whilst Sao Tome is more eroded, both have phonolitic rock towers erupting vertically from the rainforest.

Part of the world network of UNESCO declared World Biosphere Reserves, since 2007, Principe Biosphere trail walks and hikes are stunning.

O Quê Pipi Waterfall

Your guide takes you along a short hiking trail through the tropical rainforest. Enjoy the forest, take in superb views and cool off at one of the island’s most beautiful waterfalls. Approx. duration 3 hours.

Parrot Mountain

One of Príncipe Island’s most famous mountains. Visible from the town of Santo António, approx. 700 metres high & formed from volcanic rock. Surrounded by secondary and primary rainforest, it lies within the boundaries of the National Park.

Bird Watching

Keep eyes peeled for endemic birds such as the Dwarf Ibis and African Grey Parrot. São Tomé and Príncipe has minimum 21 endemic species of birds. Take your binoculars and venture out to discover them. Their sounds and colours are unique and unforgettable. An experience not to be missed.

Explore the South

This excursion will take you around the South of Príncipe Island, beginning with the traditional fishing village of Praia Abade. Stopping at the Nova Estrela (New Star) viewing point, you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the Ilhéu Boné do Jóquei (Jockey’s Cap). Then, at the Terreiro Velho viewing point, you can appreciate a spectacular view of the national park to the east, and São Joaquim, to the west.
