Michael & Teresa travelled to Sao Tome & Principe with Far & Wild over Christmas 2018 and New Years 2019.

All the beautiful images in this article are their own.

Together, Sao Tome & Principe represent some of the last of unspoilt Africa. Principe Island was their highlight because it was totally unspoilt, with some positive investment and beautiful small eco-conscious properties. Sundy Praia standing out as the most luxurious, but Bom Bom Lodge being breezier & more relaxed, so suitable for families and with even better beaches!

Chocolates, Turtles & Plantations

They visited Roca Terreiro Velho to try Claudio Corallo chocolate, some of the tastiest chocolates in the world. They met Claudio himself and enjoyed his expertise on the cocoa tour. Being on the equator, the land is very fertile, but hiking is sometimes difficult when it rains! They enjoyed turtle hatching walks, visiting the botanical gardens and numerous plantation houses, some of which have been beautifully restored whilst others remain in ruin since the Portuguese abandoned them in 1975.

Sao Tome Practicalities

Sao Tome town itself wasn’t adapted to Western tourism, with a poor infrastructure, but it’s very laid back, interesting and they didn’t experience any hassling at all. They needed very little cash during their trip and took Euros rather than the local currency with them as most people, including taxis, accepted Euros. Moreover, Michael experienced a few mosquitos on Sao Tome, but none on Principe which is fantastic for an equatorial rainforest destination.

Roca de Sao Joao Restaurant

The Roca de Sao Joao restaurant (Sao Joao dos Angolares) is spectacular! The views are outstanding and as they have four rooms, you could even stay here too. When travelling here, come with an open mindset because it’s a blend of South America’s relaxed and Africa’s chaotic charm.
