Trekking in São Tomé and Príncipe is a real off-the-map adventure – a chance to walk through dense rainforest, past volcanic rock towers and waterfalls, in landscapes that feel genuinely ancient. Expect high humidity year-round, with temperatures between 25 and 27°C. The rainy seasons, typically March to May and October to December, make things even more humid – so bring a rain jacket, good boots, and a willingness to get stuck in.

On São Tomé, you’ll find trails of cultural and natural interest, but it’s Príncipe that really stands out for walkers. At around 31 million years old, it’s geologically extraordinary – older than the oldest Hawaiian or Galápagos islands – with vertical phonolitic towers rising from the forest. The UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve is criss-crossed with well-guided routes. Hike to the O Quê Pipi waterfall through primary forest, or tackle Parrot Mountain, one of the island’s iconic peaks at around 700 metres high. Birders can seek out rare species like the Dwarf Ibis and São Tomé Oriole, with over 20 endemics recorded across the islands.
