Uganda's premier chimpanzee tracking destination
The best place to go chimpanzee tracking in Uganda, with superb forest birding opportunities too.
Kibale has the greatest variety and concentration of primates in East Africa, and is also one of the best places in Uganda for birding. This area is one of the last strongholds of the red colobus, and as well as the black and white colobus, there are 12 other primate species present including L’Hoest’s monkey, grey cheeked mangabey and chimpanzee. Chimpanzee tracking and birding are the main activities on a Kibale Safari holiday and you may be lucky enough to spot the rare forest elephant or even a leopard.
The best time to go chimpanzee trekking in Kibale is during the dry seasons, between June and September, and from December to February. The forest is less dense during this time, there are fewer mosquitoes, and spotting the primates is a lot easier. Chimps can be seen all year round, but trail conditions can be quite challenging during the wet season.
