One of the best national parks in Uganda
A wild and remote savannah with big skies, vast rocky mountains and golden green plains, a rare slice of undiscovered Africa
Kidepo is one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas, an expanse of rugged savannah dominated by Mount Morungole. Isolated from the Ugandan mainstream by the harsh plains to the north of Mount Elgon, Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda’s second biggest National Park, and in our opinion, easily its best. This is wild, remote and stunning country with big skies, vast rocky mountains and golden green plains dotted with giraffe, zebra, lion, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, ostrich, antelope and numerous other mammal and bird species. There is a sense of supreme isolation on a Kidepo Valley safari that distinguishes this rare slice of wild and undiscovered Africa.
Take a walk tracking game along a sandy dry riverbed fringed with palm trees. Climb to the top of a rocky outcrop and take in the views. Visit Idi Amin’s Pakuba Lodge ruins, once a safari palace, or go for a game drive in an open-topped jeep where the only other vehicle you’ll encounter is the Zebra researcher. Kidepo feels like the last remaining African frontier.
Apoka Lodge provides fantastic accommodation in this remote spot, where you can spend your leisure time soaking in your outdoor bathtub under the stars, or take a dip in the big rock swimming pool overlooking the savannah.
