If you want to go whitewater rafting in Uganda, this is the place to come. The small town of Jinja is known as the adventure capital of Uganda, and home to the source of the White Nile River, which flows out of nearby Lake Victoria. The White Nile is the longest river int he world and boasts some of the most ferocious and biggest commercially-run white water rapids on the planet. Thundering between heavily forested islands, the river has up to ten times the volume of the Zambezi, and it was only in 1996 that the international rafting companies dared make their historic first descent. Since then, rafting has taken off as one of the most popular activities with visitors to Uganda.
The water levels at the source of the White Nile are subject to very little seasonal variation which means that the rafting is excellent at any time of here. This constant volume of water guarantees one of the most exciting one-day rafting trips in the world.
There's history here too. Ugandan Dictator Idi Amin, who ruled the country ruthlessly during the 1970s, was based here whilst serving in the Colonial British Army in the 1950s. Jinja today is home to two hydro-electric dams that help power the rest of the country.
