The Fish River Canyon carves a vast, winding trench through the arid landscapes of southern Namibia, just north of the border with South Africa. Stretching over 160 kilometres long, up to 27 kilometres wide, and plunging 550 metres deep in places, it’s the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon - and a dramatic natural landmark that dominates the region.

From May to September, the cooler winter months mark the canyon’s prime hiking season. Keen walkers can descend to the canyon floor for full-day hikes or take on the famous multi-day Fish River Canyon Trail, which covers around 85 kilometres and includes wild camping under the stars. Summer temperatures soar well into the 40s, making extended hikes unsafe, but shorter rim walks, 4x4 drives, and guided bike excursions allow visitors to soak up the scenery in comfort.
