An environment like no other

Its vast floor stretches across almost 100 square miles, enclosed by dramatic crater walls rising more than 2,000 feet above the plains below. At its centre lies Lake Magadi, a seasonal soda lake fed by streams flowing down from the surrounding highlands. Particularly notable is the high volume of animals born in the crater, with over 400,000 wildebeest being born annually in just a few weeks between January and March. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the ancestral home of the Maasai people, pastoralists who migrated from the upper Nile region into northern Tanzania and Kenya several centuries ago. The Maasai are globally recognised for their distinctive dress, intricate beadwork and traditional ceremonies such as the Adumu, or jumping dance.

Today, many Maasai communities continue to practise traditional pastoralism while adapting to modern challenges, maintaining a deep connection to both the land and their livestock.

During your visit, there are several opportunities to engage with Maasai culture through guided walks, village visits and cultural experiences. These encounters can provide valuable insight into one of East Africa's most iconic cultures and add another dimension to your safari.

For those interested in human history, the crater also lies close to Olduvai Gorge, one of the world's most important paleoanthropological sites. In recognition of both its natural and cultural significance, UNESCO designated the Ngorongoro Conservation Area as a Mixed World Heritage Site in 2010, building upon its original World Heritage status awarded in 1979.

How to experience it

Travelling to Ngorongoro is easy with a variety of options available. Transport from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or the domestic Arusha Airport is available as well as direct flights to the Manyara Airstrip which is located a 1-hour drive from the crater. However, the more popular routes are a 4x4 drive into the Crater from the main safari hub in northern Tanzania, Arusha, or from neighbouring parks.

When to go

Ngorongoro Crater is a year-round destination, with each season offering its own advantages.

The dry season, from June to October, generally provides easier wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources and vegetation is less dense. However, this is also the most popular time to visit.

The green season, from November to May, brings lush landscapes, fewer visitors and excellent birdwatching opportunities. It is also the best time to experience the wildebeest calving season, one of East Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles.

Places nearby

Ngorongoro's location makes it an easy addition to almost any northern Tanzania itinerary and an excellent starting point for a wider safari adventure.

To the west, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area borders Serengeti National Park, making it easy to combine two of Africa's most iconic wildlife destinations in a single trip.

The region also benefits from good transport links to other parks, including Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park, while Tanzania's coastline and islands offer the perfect opportunity to relax after an exhilarating safari.
