If you're considering a safari in Tanzania, you can't do much better than the breathtaking beauty and remarkable wildlife density of the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Nestled in Tanzania's northern volcanic highlands, the crater offers a truly unique safari experience, with unparalleled access to wildlife as well as authentic cultural encounters.

Part of the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this landscape of outstanding natural beauty allows visitors to explore a variety of ecosystems, from dense forests and freshwater springs to open grasslands and soda lakes. This diversity supports more than 25,000 large animals, including populations of all of the Big Five and one of the highest densities of lions in Africa.

An environment like no other

The crater is actually a caldera, formed when a volcano collapses following an eruption. Created millions of years ago, Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact and inactive volcanic caldera, making it one of Africa's most spectacular natural landmarks.

Its vast floor stretches across almost 100 square miles, enclosed by dramatic crater walls rising more than 2,000 feet above the plains below. The views from the rim are extraordinary, particularly in the early morning when clouds often drift through the crater before the landscape reveals itself beneath.

The sheer scale of the crater and its natural enclosure create a feeling unlike anywhere else in East Africa. Descending from the forested rim onto the crater floor feels almost like entering another world, and it is this distinctive setting that sets Ngorongoro apart from neighbouring Serengeti National Park and Kenya's Masai Mara.

Epic Wildlife

Ngorongoro's unique landscape has created an equally remarkable mix of flora, fauna and wildlife. The area is renowned for its rich biodiversity, supported by the variety of habitats found within the crater walls.

At its centre lies Lake Magadi, a seasonal soda lake fed by streams flowing down from the surrounding highlands. Its shallow waters attract thousands of flamingos throughout the year, creating one of the crater's most photogenic scenes. These water sources also sustain the Ngoitokitok Spring and surrounding wetlands, which support a significant population of hippos.

Open grasslands dominate much of the crater floor, creating ideal conditions for wildlife viewing. Herds of wildebeest, zebra and buffalo graze across the plains while lions patrol nearby and elephants move between forests and freshwater springs. One of the joys of a game drive here is the variety of wildlife you can encounter within a relatively small area, often with several memorable sightings before breakfast. This concentration of wildlife, combined with the crater's natural boundaries, makes Ngorongoro one of the only places in Africa where seeing the Big Five in a single day is a genuine possibility.

Witness the Great Migration

Wildebeest calving is a major event in the Ngorongoro calendar

Not only does Ngorongoro boast this incredible wildlife and biodiversity, but it also sits on the route of the annual Great Migration which sees more than 2 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles traverse through Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of grazing grounds. This is undoubtedly one of the most famous spectacles in the natural world and Ngorongoro is situated at the perfect junction for experiencing it.

Particularly notable is the high volume of animals born in the crater, with over 400,000 wildebeest being born annually in just a few weeks between January and March. One of the rawest wildlife experiences on earth, visitors get to witness the wonders of natural life cycles as Ngorongoro’s lion population begins to hunt these vulnerable wildebeest calves. A truly unmissable sight for the most adventurous safari goers.

A site of human significance

However, the Ngorongoro Crater offers more than just remarkable scenery and extraordinary wildlife. It is also a place of immense cultural and historical importance.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the ancestral home of the Maasai people, pastoralists who migrated from the upper Nile region into northern Tanzania and Kenya several centuries ago. The Maasai are globally recognised for their distinctive dress, intricate beadwork and traditional ceremonies such as the Adumu, or jumping dance.

Today, many Maasai communities continue to practise traditional pastoralism while adapting to modern challenges, maintaining a deep connection to both the land and their livestock.

During your visit, there are several opportunities to engage with Maasai culture through guided walks, village visits and cultural experiences. These encounters can provide valuable insight into one of East Africa's most iconic cultures and add another dimension to your safari.

For those interested in human history, the crater also lies close to Olduvai Gorge, one of the world's most important paleoanthropological sites. The gorge has played a crucial role in our understanding of human evolution, with evidence suggesting that early human ancestors, including Homo habilis, lived in the area nearly two million years ago.

In recognition of both its natural and cultural significance, UNESCO designated the Ngorongoro Conservation Area as a Mixed World Heritage Site in 2010, building upon its original World Heritage status awarded in 1979.

How to experience it

Travelling to Ngorongoro is easy with a variety of options available. Transport from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or the domestic Arusha Airport is available as well as direct flights to the Manyara Airstrip which is located a 1-hour drive from the crater. However, the more popular routes are a 4x4 drive into the Crater from the main safari hub in northern Tanzania, Arusha, or from neighbouring parks.

The wide range of activities and opportunities offered by the crater make it the perfect destination no matter what sort of holiday you are looking for.

Adventure Safari

In addition to a traditional 4x4 driving Safari, you can experience the wonders of northern Tanzania on foot or by bike as well. The sheer volume of animals in this area make it a favourite for the adrenaline junkies and nature obsessed alike with a particular draw for photography safaris.

Romantic honeymoon safari

If you and your new spouse are looking for a romantic safari you could do little better than sleeping under the stars on the craters edge, looking out at the jaw dropping panoramic views. There is also the option of romantic picnics or combining a dream safari with relaxation by the pristine water of Tanzania’s coastline and islands.

Family adventure safari

The possibility of seeing so many species in one area makes Ngorongoro an ideal family safari choice, creating memories that will stick with your kids forever. The possibility of combining this immense wildlife with a more cultural experience with the Maasai people is another draw of this region for families.

Safari and beach holidays

The Ngorongoro Crater is ideally located for a holiday that combines a safari with the serene beaches of Tanzania allowing you to experience the best of both worlds.

Due to its unique positioning and this wide range of visitors, there is a diverse choice of accommodation options to choose from based on the type of experience you are looking for and your budget.

There are several accommodation options located on the craters edge, such as the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, where you can benefit from the exceptional panoramic views from your home base as well as the fastest direct access to the crater floor.

Other accommodation can be found throughout the Ngorongoro Conservation Area each offering a unique stay and safari options for your holiday.

When to go

Ngorongoro Crater is a year-round destination, with each season offering its own advantages.

The dry season, from June to October, generally provides easier wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources and vegetation is less dense. However, this is also the most popular time to visit.

The green season, from November to May, brings lush landscapes, fewer visitors and excellent birdwatching opportunities. It is also the best time to experience the wildebeest calving season, one of East Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles.
