Another of Tanzania's best kept secrets, Katavi National Park is a vast untouched wilderness, larger than the Serengeti, teeming with wildlife and some of the biggest herds of plains game ever seen in Africa. Surprised you haven’t heard more of it?
This is because Katavi is in remote south western Tanzania, as far off the beaten track as it gets. Accessed only by light aircraft it has few visitors each year offering an authentic and exclusive tailor made Katavi safari experience. Until recently more people climbed Everest each year than visited Katavi, and whilst visitor numbers have increased, a luxury Katavi tour undoubtedly remains at the very pinnacle of safari experiences.
Wildlife in the park is truly exceptional. Katavi is home to a huge number and variety of animals, including huge herds of buffaloes, sometimes 1000 strong, large pods of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, eland, waterbuck, topi, impala, and zebra to name but a few. There are many predators in Katavi too with large numbers of lions and leopards.
Visiting Katavi is best in the dry season as there are lots of marshy areas and flood plains that become more challenging to negotiate during wetter months. The landscape is dominated by miombo woodland which is dissected by several large rivers. These then open out into vast floodplains, for which Katavi is renowned, and attract huge herds of animals that make for spectacular game viewing.
