Tsavo Safaris

The two national parks of Tsavo are larger than any other in Kenya, with a vast combined expanse of over 20,000 square kilometres. Previously one park, the remote wilderness areas of Tsavo East and Tsavo West are divided by the railway which runs between Nairobi and Mombasa. Historically known as the ‘Lunatic Express’ and famous for the man-eating lions who preyed on the workers during construction in 1898, this railway opened up trade and tourism in the region, and is still in use today. Indeed there's a fun safari by rail that visits Tsavo, perfect for those who don't want to fly.

Kenya’s largest population of elephants are found in Tsavo, and the national parks boast a greater biodiversity than elsewhere in the country. Tsavo West has the most dramatic scenery, with endless plains, rocky peaks, natural springs and swamps. Wildlife viewing here is excellent, with an abundance of plains game, and predators such as lion, leopard and cheetah.

Tsavo East is a real wilderness experience, and being nine times larger than the Masai Mara, it’s the place to come if you want to get away from it all on a luxury Tsavo holiday. You can spend a whole day out on safari here without coming across another vehicle. The landscapes in Tsavo East are flat and arid, which makes spotting wildlife relatively easy. Keep an eye out for the famous red elephants who bathe in the vibrantly-coloured mud, and big cats who are always looking for their next meal.
