Kenya has two main attractions that are ideal for building a once-in-a-lifetime family holiday. Firstly, the many safari lodges across the various national reserves such as Samburu, Masai Mara and Tsavo offer spectacular wildlife viewing as well as the chance to immerse yourself in ancient cultures. Several lodges also offer bush schools and warrior academies for budding tribes boys and girls (and their parents!). Secondly, the Kenyan coastline features white sand beaches and warm, Indian Ocean waters that make for an idyllic family beach holiday.
The safari lodges and camps are generally more suited to older children and many come with an age restriction against under 12’s. This is because some of the camps have potential risks to very young children such as no fencing, proximity to rivers, steep steps or high walkways. Very early starts, late finishes and long days in a very bumpy vehicle can be a challenge for young children. Older children will not think twice, inevitably distracted by all the exciting wildlife and scenery that’s on offer.
The coastal resorts, particularly in Mombasa, do provide some very family-friendly destinations and are ideal if you're looking for a luxury Kenya family holiday. While the parents relax with a massage, the kids can be kept fully entertained by games and activities provided by the hotel and their qualified staff. You can split your time between relaxing by the pool and going out to sea for snorkelling and scuba diving sessions. Dining at both the safari lodges and beach resorts often involves buffet food which caters to a variety of taste buds, keeping everyone fed and happy!
