Pemba Island is a beautiful and remarkably untouched paradise in the Zanzibar archipelago and can be reached from Zanzibar mainland in 30 minutes by light aircraft. Due to its natural forests, mangrove swamps and clove plantations, Pemba Island was known as El Huthera (‘the Green’) in ancient times. The traditional villages on the island are predominantly located in the interior which has allowed the coral reefs to remain in pristine condition, providing some of the finest diving in the Indian Ocean. Between Tanzania and Pemba Island, the the Pemba Channel shelves off to depths of more than 2,000m which plays host to an array of marine life including barracuda, shark, and even whales. For those looking for a diving holiday of a lifetime, Pemba Island should definitely be considered as a top choice.
In terms of weather, the coast of Tanzania experiences the high temperatures and year-round rainfall you would expect of a tropical location such as this. There are two large seasonal peaks, however, during July/October and December/March.
