Nsefu Camp

Zambia's oldest safari camp in unspoilt wilderness

On a magnificent meander on the Luangwa River

Zambia’s oldest safari camp, steeped in history and offers a comfortable & traditional experience.

Nsefu Camp, in the Northern sector of South Luangwa National Park, was first opened in 1951 by Norman Carr and moved to its present location in 1953, before being purchased by Robin Pope Safaris in 1998. The location is key - perched overlooking the Luangwa River, I enjoyed a healthy, hearty lunch each day on the lawns watching herds of elephant crossing from one side of the river to the other. When relaxing between game drives I tried reading my book, but was constantly looking up to watch the kingfishers and hippos busily going about their days. This camp should be on your bucket list.

Nsefu's original row of six rondavel lodges has been retained, but each now has a shady wooden veranda at the front. Inside are double or twin beds surrounded by a walk-in mosquito net and large windows look out over the river. At the back, each rondavel has had a spacious en-suite shower and toilet added to the original building, which is partially open to the elements.

Nsefu offers a choice of short walking safaris, game drives and seasonal boating safaris. Typically, there are two activities per day, each lasting around 3-4 hours and led by an expert guide. All walking safaris are accompanied by an armed game ranger, as well as a fully-qualified RPS guide. If you're combining a couple of RPS camps and love walking, consider walking from lodge to lodge as part of your safari activities.

Our Difference

The Far & Wild Community...

We think that the best people to talk about an experience are those directly linked to it. Our website and brochures let the ‘real experts’ show their stuff… local experts, travellers & industry insiders. Look out for the coloured markers all around the site... they mean that you are reading something contributed directly by a person from one of these different parts of the community we are part of.

The best memories aren’t simply places and hotels, they are made up of experiences and people… so we connect with local communities, and strive for sustainable travel to make your holiday special
