A wonderful balance of comfort, charm and friendly staff
Location
Set along the meandering Luangwa River in a quiet, wildlife-rich corner of South Luangwa National Park, Kaingo Camp is beautifully remote. What we love here is the feeling of true wilderness, perfect for travellers who want to be immersed in nature.
Rooms
Just six chalets sit tucked beneath the ebony trees, each carefully crafted from natural materials and designed to blend into the surroundings. Inside, they’re relaxed and inviting, with king-size beds, solar lighting, and an open-air bathtub for soaking under the stars. You’ll have a private deck perched above the river, where you can sip your morning coffee while elephants meander past.
Amenities
The heart of camp is the thatched main area, open to the river breeze and filled with character. There’s a cosy lounge and library, a bar made from ancient leadwood, and long, sociable dining tables that bring people together over excellent food and stories from the day. Everything runs on solar, and the camp’s style is simple but soulful, with thoughtful touches throughout.
Activities
You’ll head out with expert guides on game drives and walking safaris, with the added bonus of Kaingo’s renowned photographic hides. These offer a rare opportunity to sit quietly at eye level with elephants or watch carmine bee-eaters flit across the water. It’s a photographer’s dream, but also a wonderfully intimate way to connect with the wild.
Sustainability
The camp works hand-in-hand with Conservation South Luangwa and Project Luangwa, helping fund critical anti-poaching patrols, wildlife rescues, and education programmes in local communities. The team also maintains over 120 km of roads and firebreaks throughout the reserve, ensuring both guest access and rapid-response support for conservation efforts when it’s needed most.
Kaingo is fully off-grid, with solar power running the camp and water drawn sustainably from their own boreholes, then carefully filtered and returned to the landscape through eco-friendly sand and grease traps. The organic “Shenton Plot” garden, nourished with compost from the camp, provides seasonal fruit, vegetables, and eggs for the kitchen. As a founding member of Project Luangwa, the camp also supports nearby schools, clinics, and entrepreneurial programmes.
