A luxury adventure lodge ideal for hikers and walkers
Location
Mount Gahinga Lodge is nestled on the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in south‑western Uganda. Set above lush forest and rolling hills, the lodge offers sweeping views of the volcanic peaks and provides direct access to gorilla and golden monkey treks in one of Africa’s most striking landscapes.
Rooms
Accommodation comprises eight traditional hand‑built bandas inspired by local Bufimbira architecture, with two deluxe and six standard units. Each banda features en‑suite facilities, fireplaces for cool evenings, and private verandas framing panoramic views of the Virunga volcanoes. Interiors use natural materials, combining comfort with a strong sense of place in the highland environment.
Facilities
The lodge’s communal areas include a cosy lounge and dining space where meals prepared from fresh local ingredients are served, along with a well‑stocked bar and outdoor terraces for enjoying the scenery. A small spa and massage services provide relaxation after trekking, while landscaped gardens and lounge areas offer quiet spaces to unwind between activities.
Activities
Activities here celebrate both wildlife and culture. The lodge is an excellent base for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and golden monkey tracking in the bamboo forests of the Virungas. Guests can also enjoy guided nature walks and birdwatching, volcano hikes on Gahinga, Sabinyo or Muhavura, and cultural visits including community walks and experiences with the Batwa people of the region.
Sustainability
Mount Gahinga Lodge is deeply involved in conservation and community development through its partnership with the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT). The lodge supports projects that preserve gorilla habitat, promote reforestation, and reduce human‑wildlife conflict, while also empowering the Batwa community by helping fund the Batwa Vocational Centre and the Batwa Heritage Site, where visitors can learn about traditional forest life and cultural practices.
