The perfect safari holiday in the Nyika Plateau
In the far north of Malawi, Nyika National Park treats those that venture here with one of the most unique safari experiences in Africa.
The scenery is more reminiscent of the Yorkshire Dales than the typical African bushveld or savannah; with its rolling hills, covered with montane grassland. Viewing Africa’s wildlife, including roan, eland, zebra and variety of other antelope species in this habitat makes for an exceptional and truly memorable safari. Whilst not guaranteed, this is also one of the best places in Malawi to spot leopard, meandering between the patches of evergreen forest and potentially during daylight hours, due to the temperate climate.
This high-altitude plateau and its breathtaking views can be enjoyed as part of a traditional 4x4 safari, on foot, or more uniquely by mountain bike. Malawi’s largest park, at 3200 square kilometres and with altitudes in excess of 2500 metres, Nyika is also rich in birdlife and flora. About 400 bird species are found here, including some specials, such as the endemic red-winged francolins and rare Denham’s bustard, augur buzzard and wattled crane.
The wild alpine flowers further add to Nyika’s natural beauty, especially during the rains when an array of gladioli, protea, and in excess of 200 varieties of orchid come into flower.
Less well known than Malawi’s southern reserves, Nyika undoubtedly offers plenty to entice the adventurous traveller away from the more beaten path.
