Best time to visit Chile
A month by month guide of when to visit Chile
Chile’s climate varies significantly from north to south due to its extreme length and diverse geography. In the north, destinations like San Pedro de Atacama and La Serena experience a dry desert climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is between December and February, when skies are clear and conditions are ideal for stargazing, exploring the Atacama’s salt flats, and enjoying outdoor excursions. Thanks to its consistent weather, this region can be visited year-round.
Central Chile, including Santiago, Valparaíso and the wine valleys, has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cooler, wetter winters. The peak season runs from December to March, when temperatures often reach between 25°C and 35°C - perfect for beach trips, city exploration and wine tasting. Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) bring mild temperatures, fewer tourists and beautiful vineyard scenery. Southern Chile, including the Lake District and Patagonia, has a cooler, wetter climate with highly changeable weather. From November to March, conditions are best for hiking, boating and exploring national parks such as Torres del Paine. Summer temperatures range from 10°C to 25°C, but strong winds and sudden shifts are common, so layered clothing is essential.
Chile also hosts lively events throughout the year. In January, Santiago’s Festival de las Condes features music, dance and fireworks. February sees the colourful Valparaíso Carnival, while March marks the National Grape Harvest Festival, celebrating the country’s wine heritage with tastings, parades and traditional ceremonies across the wine regions.
