This historic, lively and charming town is nestled in the hills around a lake, and is a great place to spend a couple of days when travelling from north to south Sri Lanka.
Kandy’s star attraction is the Temple of the Tooth, a major Buddhist pilgrimage site at the heart of the old city. The temple is home to a relic of the Buddha’s tooth, historically a symbol of royal power in Sri Lanka. The tooth was housed wherever the capital was, and Kandy was the last Sinhalese capital before the colonial period.
Known as Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, Kandy is a great place to enjoy some traditional dance performances. Speaking of culture, the Kandy Esala Perahera Festival is a vibrant and colourful spectacle taking place over ten days in July/August, during which a replica of the tooth casket is paraded around. Kandy can get quite busy at this time so be sure to book your accommodation well in advance.
Kandy is also the gateway to the Hill Country, and you should always try and make time for a stopover here on your way from the Cultural Triangle to the hills – the train journey from here to Nuwara Eliya is a particularly beautiful route meandering through forested hills and tea plantations
