Our experts say
Sri Lanka is a great destination for a family holiday, with a superb selection of family-oriented hotels and lots for both kids and parents to do. Be as active or lazy as you like.
We recommend keeping a hotel on the south coast as your base, and doing a selection of days out – including whale watching by boat, helping baby turtles return to the sea, spotting wild elephants and exploring nearby markets. And of course, spend some quality time at the beach or by the pool.
This is just a suggested itinerary – get in touch to discuss what will work best for you.

The itinerary…
Day 1: Take to the skies!
Fly from wherever you are to Sri Lanka. From the UK the best option is overnight with Sri Lankan Airlines.
Day 2: Welcome to Sri Lanka!

Negombo
We will be waiting to greet you on your arrival in Colombo. Meet your chauffeur guide who will be with you for your entire trip in Sri Lanka. Your first stop is a nearby hotel on the coast near Negombo, where you can freshen up and relax after your journey. Settle in to laidback Sri Lankan life, or pop out to the nearby beaches and markets.
Day 3: To the South Coast

Southern beaches - Ahangama
Today’s drive to the south coast will take about 3 hours. We have hand-picked a selection of accommodation across the south coast to choose from to suit your tastes and budget. Speak to us about which hotel would be best for your family. This will be your base for the next week as you explore what southern Sri Lanka has to offer for a family getaway.
Day 4: Whale watching in Mirissa

Whale watching in Mirissa
Get up early to see the largest living creatures in the world, the blue whale. You can either venture out in the standard boats (the larger ones give the better views), or we can arrange whale-watching by luxury yacht or even plane. Look out for dolphins and turtles as well.
Please be aware that whale sightings are less common in the summer months, and can't be guaranteed. The best time for whale watching on the south coast is during winter, between November and April.
Day 5: Turtle Hatchery in Kosgoda

Today drive up the coast just over an hour to the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery to learn more about this great conservation project, and help the hatchlings get back safely to the sea.
Day 6: Explore the fort town of Galle

Galle lighthouse
A day trip to explore the seaside colonial town of Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage sites with its fort, museums, and streets full of boutiques and restaurants. It’s a lovely town to walk around, do some shopping and try some seafood. We can also arrange mask painting for the children here if you like, and on your way back you can stop to try some traditional stilt-fishing.
Day 7: Elephants in Udawalawe National Park

See if you can spot baby elephants
It’s a couple of hours drive inland to the open expanses of Udawalawe National Park. After stopping off at the Elephant Transit Home where baby elephants are cared for before release, head out for a game drive inside the reserve. Here you can see herds of elephants gathering by the reservoir, as well as peacocks, buffalo, deer and a lot more besides.
Days 8 to 10: Relax and enjoy your holiday

Mirissa Beach
Spend your last few days enjoying the pool and the seaside. Or let us know if there is anything in particular you would like to do.
Day 11: Fly home
Transfer to the airport for your return flight home. If you prefer we can arrange a final night closer to the airport, for a shorter and more comfortable journey home.
