Ellerton

Built by the manager of a tea estate over a 100 years ago, Ellerton sits at about 2,400 feet in an area that enjoys some of the best weather the country has to offer. Today the estate retains its colonial character and air of tranquility, and with beautiful gardens and a rather glorious pool, it makes a great base for exploring Kandy and the central hill country. Guests always feel very welcome at Ellerton, and it's more like staying at a friend's house than a hotel.

The eight en-suite double bedrooms are spread out over the property. Some in the main house, which is furnished with antiques and where guests gather for pre-dinner drinks in the evenings, and some in the Valley House which boasts spectacular views across the valley. The latter has a huge veranda, great for sitting in the shade during those hot afternoons. There are also a couple of self-contained garden bedrooms with private balconies and views down the valley to the Alagalla Mountains. Dining at the Ellerton is a delicious affair with fresh local produce and seasonal vegetables combining to create tasty three-course evening meals. Breakfast can be enjoyed at any time of day, and afternoon tea is always a popular choice.

By day there's lots to do, and with Kandy just a 30 minute drive away you'll want to visit the Botanical Gardens, and the beautiful lake, as well as the famous Temple of the Tooth - one of the holiest sites of Buddhism. There are plenty of local walking trails, bicycle rides around the Orange Field Tea Factory or even day trips to explore the ancient sites at Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla, which are about two hours north.
