James Bond is inescapable in Udaipur. Everywhere you go they will have Octopussy on the TV, as if the film is Udaipur’s best claim to fame. It’s not - there’s a lot to see in Rajasthan’s “City of Lakes”, so make sure you spend a couple of days here to really appreciate the place.
Udaipur is often called the most romantic city in India, and strolling around the lakes and palaces it’s easy to see why. It was on an island in Udaipur’s central Lake Pichola that Emperor Sha Jehan took his inspiration for the Taj Mahal.
Another island is home to the iconic Taj Lake Palace hotel – although you might prefer to choose another lakeside hotel, and wake up with a view of it.
