Our experts say
Live the magic of the Indian desert countryside - take in the sights of Rajasthan while staying in rustic royal fort hotels in stunning locations
On a trip like this you get to see more of the real India, meet local communities, and stay in charming rustic heritage properties - many of which are former palaces and forts so you don't need to leave the luxury behind.
You still get to see many of Rajasthan’s best sites (and the Taj Mahal), but with a rural twist. And despite being “off-the-beaten-track”, this is also a good choice for first-time visitors to India, as it allows you some peace and space from the hectic cities. In fact, we think this is something everyone should do on their first trip to India.

The itinerary…
Day 1: Take to the skies
Take the overnight flight to New Delhi.
Day 2: Welcome to India

Lodi Gardens in Delhi
On arrival in Delhi you will be met and transferred to your hotel. You’re here for a rural adventure but while you’re in Delhi it’s great to have a look around. So once you have freshened up, head out with your guide to explore the winding alleys and bazaars of Old Delhi, wander the Red Fort, and take a cycle rickshaw to the magnificent mosque at Jama Masjid.
Day 3: Explore Delhi

Safdarjung's tomb in Delhi
A full day to venture out with your driver and guide to explore some of the most interesting spots in Delhi like the tomb of the emperor Humayun, and the medieval tower at the Qutab Minar.
Day 4: Agra & the Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal from the river Yamuna
This morning it’s a 3-4 hour drive to Agra, the home of the world’s most beautiful building, the Taj Mahal. Spend the afternoon exploring the Taj and the nearby Red Fort.
Day 5: Ramathra Fort

Soak in the views at Ramathra
With the necessary sightseeing out of the way it’s time to leave the cities behind and drive out into the countryside. First stop in the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri, and then on to your home for the next two nights - the remote Ramathra Fort is a traditional building with splashes of luxury.
Day 6: Ramathra Fort

Ramathra Fort village walk
A day to relax, although there is plenty to do as well. Go for a boat ride on the nearby Kalisil lake, or a jeep safari across the Daang plateau, or explore the nearby traditional village of Ramathra.
Day 7: Bhainsrorgarh

Bhainsrorgarh Fort
Just when you’ve got used to life at Ramathra Fort, it’s time to pack up and move off to another beautiful rustic palace. The drive to the next fort hotel in Bhainsrorgarh is fairly long at 6-7 hours, but the scenery is mesmerising and you can break the journey with a lunch stop in the charming town of Bundi.
Day 8: Bhainsrorgarh

Boat ride at Bhainsrorgarh
Wake up in the beautiful 18th century fort hotel at Bhainsrorgarh, towering over the river Chambal. The day is all yours to relax and enjoy the surroundings, or you can ride a boat on the river and try a spot of fishing, and visit the nearby 9th century Baroli temples.
Day 9: Castle Bijaipur

Castle Bijaipur
Again, you could get used to life at Bhainsrorgarh, but we will now whisk you off a few hours down the road to stay as a guest of the ruling family in 16th century Castle Bijaipur. Put your feet up or explore the surroundings and village on foot, cycle or horseback. Hotel staff can help you find your way around.
Day 10: Udaipur – City of Lakes

Udaipur
It’s about 4 hours to Udaipur, and on the way stop at the gigantic fort at Chittorgarh, the largest in India – don’t forget to check out the incredible Vijaya Stambha tower. You will arrive in Udaipur in the evening.
Day 11: Udaipur – City of Lakes

Udaipur lake
You have all day to explore Rajasthan’s most romantic city, set around three large lakes and surrounded by ancient mountains. We will give you a guided tour of the town, including the City Palace, the gardens at Sahelion-ki-Bari and Jagdish Temple.
Day 12: Chanoud Garh

Chanoud Garh
After a couple of days in the city it’s back to the countryside today as we drive you 3-4 hours to the rural heritage hotel at Chanoud Garh. Check in and head out for a jeep safari through villages, where you can stop and visit family homes, before continuing on to a salt pan.
Day 13: Chanoud Garh

Dining at Chanoud Garh
Today we will take you on a walking visit of the village to meet the local community, and spend the rest of the day relaxing or exploring the area – there some lovely hilltop view nearby for walkers.
Day 14: Jodhpur – the Blue City

Jodhpur, the blue city
This morning it’s a 3-hour drive to Jodhpur, the Blue City. Check in to your hotel, and spend the afternoon exploring the majestic Mehrangarh Fort which looms over the blue city, and try your best haggling in the clock tower market.

Check out of your hotel before 12 noon, and we will drive you about 5 hours to New Delhi airport for your flight home.
