Fateh Prakash was originally built to host royal functions for Maharana Fateh Singh, one of the greatest Maharanas of Mewar (rulers of the region) who ruled from 1884 to 1930. Today it is a beautifully maintained heritage hotel on the side of Lake Pichola and one of the best options for staying in Udaipur, not least for its views of the lake and the Lake Palace.
Rooms and suites are royally decorated with vintage furniture and original paintings. The hotel is part of the much larger City Palace complex which also includes palaces, galleries, restaurants and hotels. The hotel’s own Sunset Terrace is a great place to dine al fresco with views of the lake and regular live traditional music. Try the afternoon tea at the Surya Darshan Bar. Other points of interest in the hotel are the Durbar Hall Sabhagaar (its first stone was laid by a British Viceroy) and the Crystal Gallery with its rare paintings.
Make sure you go for a boat ride on the lake. When you are not out exploring India’s most romantic city, enjoy the hotel’s swimming pool and steam room, or play a spot of billiards.
