A superb choice for both couples and families looking to enjoy the wildlife-rich Khwai Concession
Location: Nestled away on the banks of the Khwai River, in the Okavango Delta’s Khwai Concession, this charming little camp is shaded by groves of trees and is an idyllic spot for a few days’ safari in one of Botswana’s most iconic regions.
Rooms: There are just 7 beautifully designed suites here, including a two-bedroom family suite, so it retains a very private and intimate feel, whilst being perennially popular and often full, meaning a lovely atmosphere prevails whenever you choose to stay. The rooms are packed with creature comforts, including gloriously comfortable beds draped with mosquito nets, en-suite bathrooms with full amenities, private decking areas and in-room charging points.
Amenities: The main area of the lodge is the social hub of life at Khwai Leadwood, with guests able to congregate in the open-sided lounge area for drinks and to enjoy the views out across the surrounding plains. A sparkling swimming pool offers welcome relief from the heat of the day and the charming staff are always on hand for a chat, to point out any wildlife that goes ambling by and to make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible. The food is outstanding, with menus designed to include seasonal, locally available produce and culinary influences. Boma dinners under the stars are especially popular and weather permitting all guests should be able to experience these.
Activities: Daily activities on offer from Khwai Leadwood include morning, afternoon and night time game drives to see the areas varied wildlife, including lion, leopard, elephant and wild dog. They also offer guided walks with an armed ranger and, when water levels permit, mokoro canoe safaris along the channels of the gently flowing Khwai River.
Sustainability: Beyond the eco‑friendly infrastructure, the camp is part of a community-led conservation model, paying lease fees to the Khwai Development Trust. These funds support a Community-Based Natural Resource Management programme run by villagers, helping turn former hunting concessions into protected wildlife sanctuaries.
