One of Oman's biggest tourist destinations
This dramatic mountainous region is perfect for heading off the beaten track
The Hajar mountain range extends across the entire East coast of Oman, from Sur to the Musandam Peninsula. The awe-inspiring geology of the Al Hajar mountains provides a gateway to the country's heartland, and for any visitor, this cooler mountainous region is without doubt a huge allure, alongside the dramatic wadis, crumbling abandoned villages and extensive hiking trails.
This region deserves more than a fleeting visit, with stunning areas to explore, including Wadi Nakher in the depths of Oman's deepest canyon, and Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in the Hajar range, which boasts some incredible views. Historical Nizwa, offers many rewards for visitors, such as World Heritage Fort, an impressive Grand Mosque and an interesting souk where you can buy all your holiday souvenirs.
If you choose to visit during March and April, the air will be filled with the fragrance of damask roses from Jebel al Akhdar. This period is when local villagers produce rose water, and the fresh floral scents will follow you on your journey through the Hajar Mountains.
