Camp out overnight in the desert
Discover the diverse terrain of the golden desert sands and dunes
The Sharqiya Sands is a region of desert in Oman, named after the Bani Wahiba tribe and known locally as Wahiba Sands. Located in the Eastern region of Oman, the geography is mixed. In the north there are wide flat areas with small dunes, whereas to the east the dunes can amass up to 100 metres.
The desert has been of scientific interest for many years because of the diverse terrain, flora and fauna. As a result this rich landscape boasts noteworthy species of migratory birds and other wildlife. Around 3000 Bedouin reside in the Wahiba sands are, some of whom you may get to meet when visiting.
The sands offer visitors a glimpse into traditional life, fast disappearing as modern conveniences limit the necessity for a nomadic existence. Home to the Bedouin, you can interact with Omani women discovering how their lifestyles offer them a more visible social role. Despite elaborate costumes they are accomplished drivers and often come to the rescue of tourists stuck in the sands.
Although possible to visit the sands on a day trip, the majesty of a starry night sky and the pleasure of soft dawn light makes it a remarkable experience to stay and camp overnight.
