A bit off the beaten tourist track, the old harbour town of Trincomalee – aka Trinco – on the east coast is a great place to visit if you’re traveling to the lesser-visited northern regions of Sri Lanka. The culture here is strongly influenced by the town’s Tamil population, and the there's plenty to see and do over a couple of days in the area.
Stroll along the beautiful white sand beaches at Nilaveli or Uppuveli (some of the best in Sri Lanka) and watch the sunset whilst swinging in a hammock at one of the chilled-out beach bars. Visit the natural harbour - one of the largest in the world - and try to imagine the British, Dutch and Portuguese ships that anchored here all those years ago. Explore the forts, colonial buildings and Hindu temples in and around Trincomalee, or head out on a whale watching trip if you're there between March and August. Nearby Pigeon Island is one of Sri Lanka's best snorkelling spots, and watersports enthusiasts can enjoy surfing, scuba diving and fishing along this coastline.
