You won’t see many other tourists up in the northern part of Sri Lanka. The long war meant that until recently the region was mostly off-limits and it's only just emerging as a top place to visit. The culture here is strongly influenced by Tamil India, and while there are fewer stand-alone sites to see compared with the rest of the country, all the little things here add up to offer an amazing experience of the real Sri Lanka. Expect a lot of interaction with the locals, and every now and then a guy appearing from nowhere to rustle up a tasty lunch for you.
Make sure you stay in the Fox Jaffna hotel, an incredible place with a unique history. Nearby Delft Island makes an interesting day out – somewhere that makes up for its lack of roads with a population of wild horses left here by Dutch colonisers. Swim with sharks and sea turtles at Pigeon Island, or sail out to sea for a spot of whale-watching.
Northern Sri Lanka is a great option for returning visitors who want to experience something completely different.
