With the bluest sky in the world, and scenery that can look more like Star Wars than anywhere on Earth, it is really very difficult to take a bad photo in the high-altitude desert region of Ladakh. Every corner you turn around is just more stark and stunning beauty.
Ladakh’s capital is the old town of Leh. Prepare to be greeted with a friendly “Jullay!” by the hospitable Ladakhi people. Leh makes a great base to explore some of the Buddhist monasteries, high passes and stunning blue lakes in the region.
Leh stands at an altitude of 3500m, so you’ll need a couple of rest days to acclimatise after flying in. This area is high above the monsoon clouds, and so the best time to visit is in summer when the rest of India is off-season.
In the wider Ladakh region you can visit monasteries and stay in an eco-camp in Uletokpo, cross the world’s highest road pass to ride one-humped Bactrian camels in the Nubra Valley, and sleep warmly on the banks of the high-altitude lake at Pangong Tso.
