A flavour of colonial times in the hills
Ride the iconic toy train up into the cool Himalayan foothills for a glimpse into the past
Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, Shimla is a bustling town famous as the summer capital of the British Raj - when Delhi got too hot, they moved everything up to Shimla, and much of the British flavour still remains. Although the city has grown in recent years, we still think a visit to Shimla feels a bit like rewinding to the time of the Raj, when memsahibs would stroll along to flirt and gossip at Scandal Point, and gentlemen with political ambitions would meet for racing and croquet.
The best hotels here are renovated properties from this period, and any accommodation in Shimla will give you more than a flavour of colonial times, whether you stay at the Clarke’s Hotel, Wildflower Hall or the royal house of Chapslee.
The old British toy train remains operational and is still the most stylish way to arrive in Shimla. While in town don’t miss the Viceregal Lodge, the Gaiety Theatre, and for goodness sake don’t be late for afternoon tea.
