Perched on a volcanic crater

Constructed to make as little impact as possible on the surrounding landscape

Location: Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge sits dramatically on the western rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stone-build lodge is cloaked in indigenous vines, designed to be unseen from the crater floor 600 metres below, creating a seamless connection with the landscape. Guests benefit from uninterrupted views across the expansive crater floor, just steps from their rooms, providing perhaps one of the most iconic vantage points in East Africa.

Rooms: The lodge offers 75 rooms, including standard doubles, twins, triples and the premium Kimba Suite, arranged along two tires in a long low-rise layout that hugs the crater rim. Each room features earthy African décor styled with prehistoric cave-painting motifs, brass lamps, Maasai carvings and wildwood mirrors. All have en-suite bathrooms, private rock-enclosed balconies overlooking the crater, Wi-Fi, tea/coffee facilities and 24-hour room service. The Kimba Suite adds a separate sitting room, minibar and enhanced comfort.

Amenities: Public spaces centre around a split-level, ivy-covered dining and lounge area ideal for crater-view meals and sundowners. At its heart burns a constant fire, framed by decor inspired by the nearby Olduvai Gorge. The dining room serves breakfast and lunch buffet-style, while dinner is a set menu with salad buffet options and the possibility of arranging bush dinner at scenic viewpoints. Additional conveniences include a bar with fireplace, a curio/gift shop, TV/lounge room, conference tent, valet and babysitting services. Wi-Fi is available in public areas and many rooms.

Activities: Ngorongoro Serena Lodge offers seamless access to daily game drives into the crater, where guests descend into a rich mosaic of habitats to encounter rhino, lion, elephant and vast herds of wildebeest and zebra. The ldoge also offers guided nature walks along the crater rim, Maasai cultural experiences, cooking classes, and evenings with resident naturalists sharing insights into the ecology of the area. Bush breakfasts and themed dinners on the crater rim can also be arranged for memorable dining.

Sustainability: The lodge is built from local river stone and vines, blending into the crater rim and preserving natural sightlines from below. It operates eco-conscious systems including inverters, water recycling, and local sourcing of food and produce. Employment opportunity and community partnerships - such as tree planting project at Oloirobi Primary School and support for Maasai women artisans - are integral parts of its commitment. Waste is recycle, and the lodge supports Maasai community by selling local handicrafts.

January

January is mixed when it comes to weather, temperatures rise whilst the chance of rain and humidity increases. It is still a good time to go, as the rates are lower yet the game viewing is still excellent.

  • During this time migratory herds are in the Serengeti for calving season, meaning the Ndutu plains are busy.

February

The weather remains hot with a chance of rain in February.

  • Meanwhile in the Ndutu Plains the migration is still occurring.

March

March is the calm before the storm, before heavy rains and humidity builds. Visitors can take great advantage of lower rates during the low season.

  • Migrating herds start to leave Ndutu, heading West towards Grumeti.

April

April experiences continued periods of heavy rain, we would advise against travel due to the conditions.

May

During may there is periods of heavy rain, we would advise against travel due to the conditions.

June

June heralds the wet season, bringing lush green vegetation which can make spotting game more difficult. It is a particularly great time for birders as parks become populated by migratory birds especially in the South.

  • Migration is still in the Grumeti area, heading north.

July

July is the start of peak season, temperatures reach up to 30 degrees and the surrounding land becomes drier and spotting game is becoming easier.

  • The migration is in the Northern Serengeti moving towards Kenya.

August

August is peak season, with bush land drying out game spotting becomes much easier. If you want to experience Tanzania game at its best, August is the time to travel.

  • The migration still remains in the north.

September

Peak season continues in September, the Northern circuit can be very busy, if you want to avoid crowds it's best to visit the southern parks.

  • The end of the migration is still in the north with herds on both side of the Kenyan and Tanzanian borders.

October

Peak season continues into October with good game viewing in the Serengeti and southern parks.

  • The migration has now crossed over into Kenya.

November

November is the start of the rainy season, the rains tend to be overnight so it is still a popular time to travel. During this month you can take advantage of low season rates.

  • Migration crossing over into the Serengeti can be seen a the Tanzania and Kenya border.

December

Rains continue in December, whilst the temperature and humidity start to build. Venturing out on safari is generally good, with large game still easily spotted.

  • Migrating herds in the north travel south back to Ndutu.
