A green expanse of jungles and lakes sprawled across the Cardamom Hills, Periyar National Park is one of the best places in India to spy on wild elephants as they go about their daily lives, as well as a host of other wildlife. The reserve is also home to about 35 wild tigers, although to be honest it is unlikely you will spot one here – so don’t come with that expectation, and you will enjoy everything else.
This hilly part of Kerala is fresher and cooler than the coastal areas, and traveling here is a restful breath of fresh air on a cross-country journey, with some excellent camps and lodges to stay in.
